Resumen

South America's land cover has been influenced by factors such as urban sprawl and vegetation cover change. The Andean valleys are relevant for cities development. The Mantaro valley in Peru is a clear example of the effects of the urban sprawl of Huancayo city and other districts, which reduce their agriculture cover and wild ecosystems. This complex ecological situation arrives into a new perspective of land management. Where governments have to go through this unknown field by applying new technology and scientific knowledge. In order to bring light, this research is an approach in the understanding of the land cover dynamic in highlands. Applying Fuzzy-Boolean logic and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) decision analysis based on GIS, analyzing influences of factors, Which are divided into three main categories: The main criteria for mapping the potential locations for land expansion include socio-economic (the proximity to roads, urban areas, and villages), orography (slope and altitude) and the environment (river network and protected areas). Finally, the results show that the urban sprawl was followed by the agricultural intensification and peri-urban condominization at the valley floor (quechua).
