Resumen
This article seeks to analyze the crime boom that occurred after independence was sworn in southern Peru, and its relationship with the militarization of society and the permanence of foreign armies in that territory, during the period from 1825 to 1845. The criminal cases from the Superior Court of Justice fund, deposited in the Regional Archive of Arequipa, have been used as a fundamental source. There are around a thousand cases corresponding to the former departments of Arequipa, which included the current departments of Moquegua, Tacna, Puno and Arequipa, in Peru, and Arica and Parinacota and Tarapacá, in Chile. Finally, we suggest some explanations about the criminal peculiarities, the situation of civil war and the presence of demobilized foreign soldiers, based on Travis Hisrchi’s Theory of Social Control, and especially his concept of attachment.a
