Resumen

This article raises the hypothesis that in the twenty-first century in the city of Lima, the processes of commodification have generated changes in space production, urban expansion, and modalities of access to urban land for the lower-income sectors. Informal market auctions are replacing non-commercial mechanisms such as invasions and public land distribution programs. The methodology used was based on case studies and used quantitative and qualitative techniques. Among its conclusions, the city of Lima, between 2001 and 2018, has expanded by 91 % by illegal mechanisms, in which commercial transactions have greater weight than noncommercial ones. Growth occurs on non-productive nature public or communally owned land and the submarkets have a political character that without the participation of the authorities could not exist.
