Resumen

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a serious health problem that affects all age groups and is associated with high rates of morbidity, complications, and long- and short-term mortality, as well as being associated with moderate health costs. Recent years have seen an increase in the proportion of immunocompromised and elderly patients hospitalized due to pneumonia, and the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has highlighted the impact of severe respiratory infections globally. The increased mortality observed in patients with severe pneumonia is still a major concern, despite advances in pneumonia diagnosis, new treatment options, and preventive measures. Strategies such as early initiation of suitable antibiotic therapy, choice of the optimal center for treatment purposes, identification of patients at higher risk of drug-resistant pathogens, and early identification of those at risk of serious complications can improve outcomes.
