Abstract

Introduction: Research plays an important role in societal development and progress. The undergraduate level is the first approach to research practice. Objective: To analyze student contribution with medical journals indexed in SciELO-Peru. Methods: Bibliometric study, which included all the original contributions including at least one medical student as author, published in medical journals indexed in SciELO-Peru between the years 2006-2015. Results: Eight Peruvian medical journals indexed in SciELO-Peru were assessed. 12% of publications had at least one medical student as author. The Peruvian Journal of Experimental Medicine and Public Health concentrated 35% of student publications. When assessing the type of publication, the original articles accounted for 44%, followed by letters to the editor (33%). The scientific societies of medical students were included, as part of the membership, in 45% of the publications, and the fact that they belong to these was significantly associated (p<0.001) with publications only made by students and the presence of a student as the first author. Conclusion: There is an increase in medical student participation in Peruvian scientific production. However, this situation is still improving; it is important to boost the factors that support this growth, such as the contribution of scientific societies of medical students in recent years.
