Jake-Prime: Educational Robot for Improving Children's Dysorthography

Research output: Chapter in Book/ReportConference contributionpeer-review

Abstract

Jake-Prime represents a significant advancement in the education of children with dysorthography. This learning disorder affects the correct spelling of words due to difficulties in phonological encoding, visual memory, and attention. This prototype, developed using Arduino technology, emerges in response to the limited availability of accessible technological tools specifically designed to address this condition in primary educational settings. Jake-Prime offers an innovative solution by integrating a matrix keypad, buzzer, and LED lights, transforming the learning process into a playful and multisensory experience that captures children's attention and reinforces the auditory and visual stimuli necessary to improve their performance. The system includes three progressive difficulty levels that automatically adjust to the user's pace, promoting personalized and sustained learning. Additionally, it features a bilingual menu in Spanish and English, enabling its use in diverse regions and extending its applicability to multilingual or special education contexts. Jake-Prime can also be used by therapists, teachers, and parents as a complementary tool in pedagogical intervention sessions, as its modular design allows for future adaptations based on each child's needs. By reducing frustration, increasing motivation, and reinforcing spelling practice, JakePrime not only improves academic performance but also enhances students' self-esteem and confidence, positioning itself as a comprehensive, inclusive educational tool with a positive impact on children's linguistic and emotional development.
