Abstract

This contribution estimates the intensity of the Surface Urban Heat Island (SUHI) during the period 2001-2020 for the Metropolitan Area of Grande Vitoria (MAGV), located in Brazil in the state of Espiritu Santo. In order to quantify the SUHI, 2 methods were used: the first is the Streutker method, in which it uses a Gaussian surface to adjust the Land Superficial Temperature (LST) of the urban and rural surface. The second method proposed by Jose Flores, uses the difference between the 0.95 quantiles of LST for the urban area and the median of the LST for the rural area. Both methods use remote sensing data from monthly LST and annual Land Cover Type products at 0.050 resolution, obtained from the MODIS sensor on board the TERRA and AQUA satellite. In general, quantile methods can be used as a supplementary analysis of the Streutker method for cities with high LST, with non-ellipsoid forms or located in coastal regions. In the AMGV, in the daytime periods, the maximum SUHI occurred in December (4.47 0C) and minimum in July (3.22 0C) and the night period, the maximum SUHI occurred in November (3.15 0C) and minimum in August (2.52 0C) using the quantile method since the Streutker method does not fit due to the border with the Santa Maria River.
