Electronic Cigarettes and Oral Health: Bibliometric Mapping of Scientific Evidence

Abstract

Aim: To analyze the bibliometric parameters of scientific output on the use of electronic cigarettes (ECs) and their implications for oral health. Materials and methods: A bibliometric study analyzing original articles indexed in Scopus on ECs and oral health published between 2015 and 2024. A search strategy based on MeSH terms was implemented. The metadata were exported and analyzed using VOSviewer for co-authorship networks and with SciVal for productivity, impact, and collaboration indicators. Results: A total of 204 original articles were included. Vohra Fahim was the most productive with 7 (3.4%) articles, while Rahman Irfan Ur (88.8) stood out for the highest average number of citations. The Journal of the American Dental Association had 10 (4.9%) publications, while the Journal of Periodontology showed the greatest impact (41.6). The United States concentrates scientific activity, presenting a wide network of collaboration. International collaboration, although less frequent (31%), had the highest average number of citations per publication (48.3). King Saud University was the most productive with 15 (7.3%) articles. Conclusion: Scientific research on e-cigarettes and oral health shows the leadership of the United States and the growing participation of Saudi Arabia. International collaboration demonstrates greater visibility and impact. Clinical significance: E-cigarettes, often perceived as a less harmful option, have a negative impact not only on oral health but also on systemic health. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen public health strategies to reduce risk factors, support community education, and promote smoke-free environments.
