Abstract
THE PAPER considers the relevance of the Greek concept oikos as a symbolic referent that could make possible the construction of an aesthetics of existence in adversity, which might become an option for staying alive when in an unfavorable situation for the existence of life and home life, that is, during conflicts as the ones experienced by a great number of persons who are refugees, immigrants or in asylum; as well as those who remain kidnaped or those who are displaced due to armed conflicts or environmental disasters. Auschwitz Concentration Camp is regarded as a referent of adversity in order to relate the cruel actions that were carried out in this place to the situations developing around the world at present. This idea is developed with the aim of proposing the experience of oikos as an intimate construction that reveals life and that might become a refuge during difficult situations.
