Abstract

In this article, unknown aspects in the life of a famous historian and priest in Southern Peru, Juan Antonio Montenegro y Ubaldi, a key witness of the Independence process and also an alleged serial sexual clerical offender will be uncovered. Through the study of his emblematic case and using archival sources reserved until recently, the turbulent circumstances not only of a specific individual, but of all the Church institutions in a troubled time of political crisis and general moral and doctrinal indiscipline in the clergy.
