Cultural Identity and the Attitude of the Population Towards Tourist Heritage

Abstract

Cultural identity is a broad concept that encompasses culture and specifically, society. In some countries, the lack of cultural identity has contributed to inhabitants permanently damaging the material cultural heritage. The purpose of this research is to analyze the relationship between cultural identity and the attitude of the population towards their tourist heritage in an urban community located in Lima, the capital of Peru. The research is of a quantitative, correlational, cross-sectional and non-experimental design; the sample was made up of 271 inhabitants, the type of sampling is simple random, and the technique used was the survey method. The data was processed with the SPSS program and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Among the results, it is highlighted that 65.3% of the inhabitants show a high level of knowledge and appreciation towards their heritage, 55.7% have a high sense of belonging and 88.2% of the inhabitants consider that passing on their heritage’s history is essential to consolidate the cultural identity of new generations. The result was sig = 0.00 < 0.05, which allows us to conclude that, in the community studied, there is a moderate relationship between cultural identity and the attitude of the inhabitants towards their heritage.
