Attitude of the Yauli-Peru community members towards the corporate social responsibility of Volcan Compañía Minera

Abstract

The objective was to analyze the attitude of community members in Yauli, Peru, toward the social responsibility of Volcan Compañía Minera. The research employed a quantitative approach and a non-experimental, cross-sectional, descriptive design. A sample of 187 community members was surveyed using a questionnaire. The results show that community members have an unfavorable attitude toward Volcan’s social responsibility (78.6%). In the social dimension, there is an unfavorable attitude toward contributions to the quality of education and infrastructure improvements; only the contribution to the quality of health indicator shows a favorable attitude. In the economic responsibility dimension, there is an unfavorable attitude toward the development of sustainable businesses and job creation; however, the attitude toward the indicators of livestock campaigns and assistance to livestock farmers is favorable. In the environmental responsibility dimension, there is an unfavorable attitude across all indicators: promotion of forestry production, water and wastewater management, solid waste management, and compliance with environmental regulations. It is concluded that Volcan Compañía Minera’s failure to comply with the commitments made has generated a significant impact on social, economic, and environmental dynamics.
