Abstract
This study proposes an energy optimization model to minimize electricity costs in Peruvian industry by integrating Free-Market procurement and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) while maintaining reliability. The model is validated in a continuous plastics plant with a 24/7 load profile, based on an audit that reconstructs 15-minute demand and characterizes peak, off-peak, and reactive consumption. The main contribution is an invoice-consistent co-optimization framework that jointly determines procurement (regulated vs. Free Market) and BESS sizing/dispatch using billing drivers (peak demand, network tolls, and reactive penalties). We compare regulated MT3, Free Market, and Free Market plus BESS peak shaving that reduces peak kW and transmission connection tolls. Results show that migrating from MT3 to a Free Market contract reduces the monthly bill by 30%, and adding a sized BESS increases total savings to 50%, with a simple payback of roughly 3-4 years and no upfront capital requirement. The Energy Triangle index indicates improved sustainability, security, and equity for 24/7 plastics facilities.
